'Verandas' a solution for retaining Free Range Poultry Status?
Whilst the Avian Influenza (AI) ban was in place, it caused consideable concern amongst free range broiler and layer producers obviously worried about the effect on their free range status.
Looking for a procative solution many are considering the use of a 'veranda' or 'winter garden' allowing flocks outside access whilst protecting them from wild birds that could carry AI and protecting the farmer's free-range status.
Norfolk producer Simon Dann built his own system which has been successfuly in use for a number of years now. Whilst in Holland and Germany a number of commercial constructions are avialble.
Here at Powell & Co. we are working with producers as they look into this potential solution. Contact us if it's of interest to your free range operation.
